Dr. Franklyn Fuller, Chairman
Department of Mathematics
San Jose State University
San Jose, Cal

Dear Dr Fuller:

\J
I am pleased to write you concerning the qualifications of John Allen
as lecturer for your data structures course.

We both feel that there must be more emphasis on the fundamental aspects
of data structures as distinct from details of implementation. Mr. Allen's
manuscript is one of the very few presently available which does this.

It is difficult to say much about his teaching abilities
since his duties at the lab do not involve lecturing, but he does appear
to enjoy teaching. I understand that he has asked the Information Sciences
Department at
the University of Santa Cruz for a recommendation; they should be
better able to judge this area.

Though I recently arrived in this country,
I understand that he has been involved with LISP for many years;
and that he was an active systems programmer,
involved in the design and implementation of the AI Project's
first time-sharing system. He is currently investigating
the development of practical
programming systems for the construction of correct programs.
The students should benefit from his experience.

He does have strong opinions about the material and that should make for a
very interesting and worthwhile course.
